Kindergarten
Community Partner: Grace Centers of Hope
The Kindergarten students decorate and assemble personal care packages for adults and children at Grace Centers of Hope. Grace Centers of Hope in Pontiac is Oakland County’s oldest and largest homeless shelter providing shelter services, counseling, life skills courses and vocational education in a drug-free environment at their state-of-the-art learning center.
Children perform chores at home to earn money to purchase some of the project needs. These items are collected prior to the actual event and are sorted, counted and placed in bags ready for use. Kindergartners also select a toy they have "outgrown" to donate to the children at Grace Centers of Hope.
Curriculum Connections: This activity fits in with the Needs and Wants section of the Social Studies Curriculum. As Kindergarten students are introduced to public issues such as homelessness and the need for public shelters, they will develop and implement an action plan to address these issues. Through these experiences, they will learn about the Social Studies disciplines of public discourse, decision-making and citizen involvement.
